Presumably not a remake of The Return of Jafar.
Despite the somewhat lukewarm response to Disney’s live-action remake of Aladdin, the House of Mouse is going ahead with a sequel, and are currently developing a follow-up, with writers already attached for the script.
John Gatins (Real Steel, Flight) and Andrea Berloff (Straight Outta Compton, The Kitchen) have been tapped to pen the sequel.
Given the project is in early development, there’s currently no news on whether Guy Ritchie will return to direct, or whether the film’s core cast of Mena Massoud (Aladdin), Will Smith (Genie), and Naomi Scott (Jasmine) will reprise their roles. However, producers Dan Lin and Jonathan Eirich will be returning to produce the sequel.
This sequel has perhaps been thought up following the backlash that Disney received when it was announced that the film’s minor white character, Prince Anders (Billy Magnussen) would be getting his own spin-off on Disney+, while leading man Massoud revealed that he hadn’t had a “single audition” since the film’s release.
So, perhaps the sequel might just be a remake of the animated Aladdin’s follow-up, The Return of Jafar after all.
More on the Aladdin sequel when we have it.
