Six months after the original release of sci-fi series Altered Carbon on Netflix, it has been announced that the series has been renewed for a second season, 8-episode run with some major changes.

Falcon actor Anthony Mackie will take over the leading role of Takeshi Kovacs from Season 1’s Joel Kinnaman.

There’s also some changes behind-the-scenes, as Alison Schapker is joining as executive producer, and will also serve as co-showrunner alongside series creator and current executive producer/showrunner, Laeta Kalogridis.

In a role similar to that of Doctor Who, the recasting of Takeshi Kovacs was expected, as in the world of Altered Carbon (based on the sci-fi novels of Richard K. Morgan) Kovacs’ journey spans centuries, through different bodies on many planets.

The nature of the books, taking place in a different time frame and a different location, Kinnaman and the most of the other members of the cast had one-year deals. Mackie will be the latest Kovacs, as the series continues to explore the themes of mortality, identity, and the soul across time and space.
