Months after the first teaser was released, we finally have a full trailer for the forthcoming sci-fi drama, Annihilation, from Ex Machina’s Alex Garland.
The film stars Natalie Portman as a woman who ventures into mysterious uncharted territory, searching for answers about her sick husband (Oscar Isaac). There was recently some debate among Annihilation’s producers about how uplifting or downbeat to make the film’s ending, and whether or not Garland would see the release of his preferred cut.
Eventually, Netflix stepped up to co-fund and co-distribute the project, in order to ensure that audiences would be able to see Garland’s intended version of his film.
So far, however, there’s a distinct lack of an official synopsis, with the studio’s release simply saying: “Based on Jeff VanderMeer’s best-selling Southern Reach Trilogy, Annihilation stars Natalie Portman, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Gina Rodriguez, Tessa Thompson, Tuva Novotny and Oscar Isaac. It was written and directed by Alex Garland (Ex Machina, 28 Days Later).”
Interestingly, there’s a general consensus from those who have read VanderMeer’s books, that this trailer isn’t all that representative of the source material, particularly in the depiction of Portman’s character – however, this is more than likely due to marketing that is trying to make the unconventional film appear more mainstream.
Annihilation is slated for release on February 23rd.
