Anya Taylor-Joy of The Witch and Split fame is set to play the titular character in a big screen adaptation of Francesca Lia Block’s cult favourite 1980s novel, Weetzie Bat.

Justin Kelly is helming the project which will also star Love, Simon actors Nick Robinson and Keiynan Lonsdale, American Honey actress Sasha Lane, and Boy Erased’s Theodore Pellerin.

Described as a neon-lit fairy tale, Weetzie Bat follows Weetzie (Taylor-Joy), an ethereal pixie living in 1980s LA, where she grew up as the child of a junkie screenwriter father and an alcoholic starlet mother. She and her best friend Dirk (Pellerin) to find love, and on her search she meets mysterious filmmaker Max (Robinson) and surfer Duck (Lonsdale). However, when their happiness is threatened by death, breakups and Max’s bitter ex Vixanne (Lane), Weetzie must take off her rose-tinted glasses and confront the darkness in a city of both glamour and crime.
