Ava DuVernay’s New Gods has found a writer in the form of Chasing MavericksKario Salem.

The list of DC’s upcoming films expanded last week, when it was revealed that A Wrinkle In Time director, Ava DuVernay, is set to direct New Gods, an adaptation of the Jack Kirby creation that spawned some of DC’s most incredible characters and storylines – including Justice League villain Steppenwolf, and his beloved Mother Boxes, which all came from New Gods.

DuVernay confirmed the news via Twitter last week, sharing a picture of Kirby with a quote from him beneath it:

It now looks like DC have found a writer for New Gods, as Deadline (who broke the original news of DuVernay’s hiring) have updated their report to include the reveal of Chasing Mavericks and The Score screenwriter, Kario Salem, as writer on the project.

With Salem on board, the project should be able to go through development without any problems. DuVernay has already said that she has begun to do more research, teasing an epic story in the process – where the duo are pulling inspiration from remains to be seen, however, she’s clearly looking to the core of what Jack Kirby originally created. And with the director revealing that Big Barda is her favourite comicbook character, she may take a more prominent role in the story, alongside Darkseid, Highfather, Orion and more.

Though the project has a writer and director attached to it, where it will be within the DC Universe remains to be seen. There have been conflicting reports as to whether the film will be a part of the DCEU, but with the extended universe having already borrowed from New Gods, if DuVernay wants to make the story her own, setting this film outside of the DCEU might be for the best.

More on New Gods as we have it.
