Directors of Avengers 4, Anthony and Joe Russo, have hinted that one key scene in Captain America: Civil War offers important plot hints for the fourth instalment of the Avengers film.

At the moment, Avengers 4 is a mystery – so much so, that Marvel won’t even release the title, claiming that it is a spoiler in itself. Set photos have hinted that time travel will be a huge part of the story, though nothing has been revealed beyond this. However, according to Joe Russo, there’s an important sequence in Civil War that connects it to the fourth Avengers film.

Speaking on MTV’s Happy Sad Confused podcast, Joe Russo has suggested that Marvel knew that the Avengers 4 set photos would leak online, saying “It’s interesting because photos always leak, and there’s lots of conjecture about what those photos mean.”

It has already come to light that some of the leaked photos might be fake, taken by a photographer in order to mislead fans.

Even more intriguingly, Russo then added that fans should re-watch Civil War:

“Certainly, there is a five-minute sequence in Civil War around a piece of technology that was laid in for a very specific reason. If you go back and look at that film, you may get a hint as to the direction.”

Many have suggested that the most likely candidate for this sequence is Tony Stark’s “B.A.R.F.” technology. The “Binary Augmented Retro-Framing” tech is a virtual reality system that was shown at the start of Civil War, in a touching moment that revealed Tony’s guilt over his parents’ deaths. This scene may well have served a dual purpose in the film, establishing technology that would go on to become a vital part of the MCU’s future.

Of course, this comment could well be another piece of misdirection from the Marvel camp, designed to drive us insane on the run-up to Avengers 4, which may also explain them withholding the title. As Joe Russo explained: “We’re gonna sit on that until we feel the time is right and when people have absorbed the first movie enough.”

And so, we’re no closer to learning the plot of Avengers 4, and Marvel are obviously enjoying seeing their fans go crazy wondering what’s real and what’s fake. If you want to paw over Joe Russo’s comments a little more, you can listen to the podcast here.

Avengers 4 is slated for release on May 3rd, 2019.
