Solving mysteries and kicking ass.
The CW has picked up nine additional episodes of new falls series Nancy Drew and Batwoman, bringing both to full-season with 22 episodes.
This is an incredible early vote on confidence from the network as these full-season orders come after only three airings each of the shows and two weeks earlier than the CW’s back orders last year. In their Fall 2018 season, the network also picked up additional episodes of all its new series, but one – Charmed – got a full 22-episode pickup. The other two, All American and Legacies, received three more episodes each, with all three going on to be renewed for a second season.
Both Batwoman and Nancy Drew have done well with delayed viewing, streaming, etc. and the CW has a big incentive to prolong the run of series that are strong digital performers, as both these series and the upcoming Katy Keene are the first to air following the end of the Netflix output deal. This means that the CW now have full in-season streaming rights, rather than the traditional last five episodes alone, allowing the network to cash in on fans bingeing the seasons in full through their digital platform.
However, the shows have also been good linear performers, as while airing alongside established CW series Supergirl and Riverdale, both Batwoman and Nancy Drew were the network’s most-watched programs on premiere nights. And while both have slipped in linear ratings since their respective premieres, Batwoman remains the CW’s second most-watched and highest-rated show in the 18-49 bracket, behind The Flash.
Batwoman sees Ruby Rose play the titular heroine, three years after the mysterious disappearance of Batman, in a Gotham full of despair. Without their caped crusader, the Gotham City Police Department are stretched thin and outgunned by the city’s criminal gangs, and so Kate Kane (Rose), armed with a passion for social justice, takes to the streets of Gotham as her own vigilante, Batwoman.
Nancy Drew sees Kennedy McMann play the brilliant teenage detective, who built a life solving mysteries in her hometown of Horseshoe Bay, Maine – until her mother’s untimely death derails her college plans. Devastated by the loss, Nancy swears off crime-solving, and settles in to counting down the days until she can apply for college once more. However, when a socialite is murdered, Nancy is labelled prime suspect, along with a group of other teenagers present at the scene.
