Bethesda has confirmed that their long-awaited space RPG Starfield will be a single-player game, marking on of the few things we know about the project that’s been in the works since 2008.

The publisher is best known for their work on long-running RPG fantasy series Elder Scrolls, and the most recent additions to the post-apocalyptic Fallout series, shocked the crowd at their recent E3 conference, by announcing their first original game franchise in almost 25 years.

The announcement of Fallout 76 as the franchise’s first multiplayer game, left gamers wondering whether the studio were shifting their focus to MMO-style RPGs, but Bethesda’s Marketing VP, Pete Hines, has refuted rumours that Starfield would not follow this trend in an interview with VGR.

Hines explained that despite the next Fallout being developed as a multiplayer, Bethesda remains committed to developing solo-play games, and the intention behind release the short teaser trailers at E3 was to ensure that fans knew this:

“[The announcement] also helps convince folks, like, look, this is not forever-more what we’re doing.” stated Hines; “We are going to do a game that’s just single-player next time around, and yes, we are going to get to Elder Scrolls VI.”

However, despite Hines confirming that the next Elder Scrolls game and Starfield will be single-player games, he did not confirm anything else about the games:

“There’s going to be a long time before we’re ready to talk about what those are, because we want the time between when we start to talk about it and it comes out to not be two years long or three years long.”

For a long time, there have been rumours circulating that Starfield will be set in the same universe as the Fallout games, and it will focus on the descendants of the first humans that were sent to colonise space before the nuclear war changed Earth. As far as Elder Scrolls goes, there’s been a lot of speculation as to which part of Tamriel will be set in – but unfortunately, for now, these are just rumours, and fans will have to wait a while before they hear any more from Bethesda.
