It seems that Warner Bros. is taking a leaf out of Deadpool’s book, as the full title of their upcoming Birds of Prey film, starring Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn, is actually entitled: Birds of Prey (And the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn).
Robbie shared a picture of the title page of Christina Hodson’s script, with the handwritten addition of the bracketed section. While many believed that this was simply Margot joking around, The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed that this is in fact the official title, riffing off the 2014 Oscar-winner Birdman or (The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance).
The “emancipation” of Harley comes from a fan-favourite element of DC’s Harley Quinn series in 2016, where, in the 25th issue, Harley finally ends her relationship with the Joker for good after finally coming to the realisation that their relationship has been an abusive one.
The Suicide Squad spinoff sees Robbie reprise her role as Harley, who assembles a girl gang to take down bad guy Black Mask (Ewan McGregor). Harley’s squad is made up of Huntress (Mary Elizabeth Winstead), Black Canary (Jurnee Smollett-Bell), Renee Montoya (Rosie Perez) and Cassandra Cain (Ella Jay Basco).
Cathy Yan is directing.
Birds of Prey (And the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn) is set for release on February 7th, 2020.
