Warner Bros. has announced that actresses Mary Elizabeth Winstead and Jurnee Smollett-Bell have won the roles of Huntress and Black Canary, respectively, in the upcoming Birds of Prey film.
The two will join Suicide Squad’s Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn in a Gotham which is not protected by Batman, so the femme fatales must fight to defeat the villainous Black Mask themselves.
Deadline has reported that 10 Cloverfield Lane’s Winstead will take on the role of Huntress, who has taken numerous forms in the DC Universe over the years, however, in the Warner Bros. series Birds of Prey, Huntress is the daughter of Batman, who disappeared after the death of her mother, Catwoman. In this series, Huntress worked with Black Canary’s daughter and Oracle as Gotham’s foremost crimefighters.
Underground’s Jurnee Smollett-Bell will play Dinah Lance a.k.a. Black Canary, a street fighter whose sonic scream is capable of killing. Both Huntress and Black Canary have made appearances in The CW’s Arrow series, the former played by Jessica Elise De Gouw, and the latter played by three different actresses, Caity Lotz, Katie Cassidy and Juliana Harkavy.
Only the role of Rene Montoya is yet to be cast, however actresses Justina Machado and Roberta Colindrez are amongst those in the mix.
Cathy Yan is directing the feature, from a script by Bumblebee’s Christina Hodson. Robbie is set to produce alongside Sue Kroll and Bryan Unkeless.
Birds of Prey is set for release on February 7th, 2020.
