Black Lightning picks up years after Jefferson first acquired his superpowers, and in the show’s present-day, Jefferson has been retired from active superhero duty for almost a decade after the job put a strain on both his physical health and the well-being of his family. Since retirement Jefferson has spent his time protecting his town as a law-abiding school principal, try his hardest to prevent young people from pursuing a life of crime.

However, when crime begins to spread once more, Jefferson knows he has no choice but to suit up as Black Lightning once again.

Along with the new extended trailer, a new poster has been revealed, with Jefferson front and centre, flanked by daughters Anissa (Nafessa Williams) and Jennifer (China Anne McClain), who look to be adopting their own superhero identities of Lightning and Thunder.

This trailer also gives us a look at villain Tobias Whale (Marvin ‘Krondon’ Jones III), indicating that he has a history with the titular hero, and is understandably unhappy to hear of his long presumed-dead enemy is back in action. It also shows that Jefferson’s wife, Lynn (Christine Adams) isn’t too pleased to find her husband is suiting up as a vigilante once more.

Existing separately from the CW’s Arrowverse (for now) this series is already shaping up to be something entirely different from the series we’ve seen before, grounding itself as more of a gritty crime drama with a sprinkling of superhero.

Black Lightning premieres on January 16th.
