Paramount Pictures has announced that they have bought the worldwide distribution rights to spy thriller The Rhythm Section. The project will be directed by Reed Morano, the executive producer for recent hit adaptation, The Handmaid’s Tale, from a script by Mark Burnell. Producers of the James Bond series, siblings Michael G. Wilson and Barbara Broccoli are attached to produce. Actress Blake Lively was also attached a month ago, to star.
The movie will be a contemporary adaptation of the first of Burnell’s Stephanie Patrick series of four British novels, where Lively will be playing the titular role – a woman on a path of self-destruction after her family are killed in a plane crash. She adopts the identity of an assassin in order to track down the those responsible for their deaths after a journalist tells her that the crash wasn’t an accident.
Whether this movie will lead to further adaptions of Burnell’s series is unclear, though it’s probably safe to say that the likelihood of that happening will entirely depend on the box office takings.
