The Mummy star Brendan Fraser has been cast as Robotman/Cliff Steele in the upcoming DC Universe series, Doom Patrol.
Steele is a former race car driver who was in a horrific accident which left his body completely uninhabitable. However, his brain was saved by the mysterious Dr. Niles Caulder, and so he lives on in a robotic body.
Fraser will be providing the voice for Robotman, as well as appearing in flashbacks as Cliff Steele. Riley Shanahan will play the physical role in a full body costume as the robotic group member.
Jeremy Carver is adapting Doom Patrol for the screen. The story follows Elasti-Woman (April Bowlby), Robotman, Negative Man, and Crazy Jane (Diane Guerrero), led by modern mad-scientist Niles Caulder. Each of the Doom Patrol’s members suffer horrible accidents that leave them with their superhuman abilities – as well as disfiguring scars. Traumatised and demoralised, Caulder gives them purpose, investigating strange and unusual phenomena and protecting the Earth from what they discover.
Picking up after the events of Titans, Doom Patrol will see these reluctant heroes called to action by Cyborg (Jovian Wade), who comes to them with a mission that’s impossible to refuse. However, it comes with a warning: should they do this, their lives will never be the same.
Doom Patrol received a 13-episode straight-to-series order in May, and is set to begin production this year for a 2019 premiere on DC Universe.
