One of Marvel’s current projects that’s being developed by Fox is a Silver Surfer solo film, which writer Brian K. Vaughn (Runaways, Y: The Last Man) is set to pen.

A solo venture starring the metallic space traveller is something that comic icon Stan Lee has wanted to see for a long time, referring to the Surfer as “the most philosophical” of all the characters he has worked on. In 2012, there were even rumours going around that Marvel Studios were trying to trade the films rights for Daredevil, for the rights to the Silver Surfer and his master, Galactus.

Since that time, much has changed, and the Surfer is set to return to the fold, thanks to the impending Disney/Fox deal.

This project is part of Fox’s efforts to expand their Marvel cinematic universe, with a range of X-Men-based films coming, such as Josh Boone’s New Mutants, and James Franco-fronted Multiple Man, which are currently in development.

The Hollywood Reporter has now shared a big update on the situation at Fox, with an insider claiming that Fox has “way more in development and production in Marvel IP than at any point in the history of the studio.”

Fox is obviously working on the basis of ‘use it, before you lose it.’

And among the Fox/Marvel movies that could arrive in the next couple of year is the rumoured Silver Surfer film, a standalone project which is said to be “going 100 miles per hour” by an anonymous executive at the studio.

2007’s Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer has been the only live-action production in which Jack Kirby’s Surfer has appeared, with The Shape of Water’s Doug Jones providing the character’s physical appearance, and Laurence Fishburne lending his voice. This appearance barely even scratched the surface of the character’s backstory, and the tragic circumstances that led to him becoming the servant of the planet-devouring villain, Galactus, leaving fans everywhere disappointed.

Hopefully, this production will do justice to a character that has been in a prime position for a reboot for over ten years.

More on the Silver Surfer film when we have it.
