When we met Bumblebee in the first of Michael Bay’s Transformers movies, he was a muscle car Chevy – not at all similar to his cartoon origins. And while it was a nice car, there’s nothing like the classic Volkswagen Beetle form. However, it seems that in the upcoming Bumblebee solo film, the autoboot will return to his roots.
A fan photo on Instagram gave a glimpse of the movie set, revealing our first look at Bumblebee’s Beetle form. The shot (below) shows two yellow bugs – one with a camera rig attached, one without, parked close by.
This prequel will take us back to the ‘80s, and will star Hailee Steinfeld as the franchise’s first female lead and based on the synopsis, it will be a little more child-friendly than its predecessors, with a more Herbie-esque vibe:
“On the run in the year 1987, Bumblebee finds refuge in a junkyard in a small Californian beach town. Charlie (Hailee Steinfeld), on the cusp of turning 18 and trying to find her place in the world, discovers Bumblebee, battle-scarred and broken. When Charlie revives him, she quickly learns this is no ordinary, yellow VW bug.”
Bumblebee is slated for release on December 21st 2018.
