Last week, it was announced that Soldado director Stefano Sollima was in negotiations with Activision to direct their live-action Call of Duty film. This week, the director knows who he wants to lead.
Speaking to Metro while at the launch for his Campari short film, The Legend of Red Hand, Sollima announced that Tom Hardy and Chris Pine are at the top of his list. The director said he was excited to see Hardy’s Venom movie, as well as having loved him in Mad Max: Fury Road, and he also commented on how he valued Pine’s range, saying: “I like when you feel that an actor can play with different nuances and tone because this means they’re a good actor.”
The two previously shared the screen in rom-com, This Means War, about two secret agents who both fall for the same girl, and date her at the same time without revealing that they know each other. Each agent uses tricks of the trade in order to knock their opponent down a notch, which leads to three alternate endings, one where Hardy gets the girl, another in which Pine does, and a final ending where the two realise that their friendship is more important.
While the Call of Duty film isn’t likely to be anything like this, Pine and Hardy have already shown that they have great on-screen chemistry, which will help should they work together on this project. Nothing is official yet, but at least this gives us an idea of what Sollima wants to do with the film.
