The upcoming Netflix show, Chilling Adventures of Sabrina has found its villain, Father Blackwood, in the form of The Collection star Richard Coyle.

The series is based on the Archie Comics character, Sabrina the Teenage Witch, and will serve as a (very) loose spinoff to The CW’s current Archie Comics hit, Riverdale, which is also distributed internationally by Netflix. Riverdale’s Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa will serve as showrunner, while Mad Men star Kiernan Shipka will play the titular role.

In the same vein as Riverdale, Chilling Adventures of Sabrina will have a darker tone than that of the original comics, and the ‘90s TV show which starred Melissa Joan-Hart as Sabrina. The new adaptation will see the main character torn between two worlds, as the half-witch, half-mortal she is.

Father Blackwood is an original character that has been created for the show. He is the High Priest of the Church of Night and Dean of the Academy of the Unseen Arts, and has been described by Deadline as “ruthless and ambitious” with “a terrifying dark agenda that will put him in direct conflict with Sabrina and other members of the coven.”

Coyle joins the ever-growing cast of the show including Wonder Woman’s Lucy Davis as Aunt Hilda, Lord of the RingsMiranda Otto as Aunt Zelda, and Slender Man’s Jaz Sinclair as Sabrina’s best friend, Rosalind. The show will also include fan-favourite Salem Saberhagen, a male witch who has been turned into a black cat as punishment for trying to take over the world.

Chilling Adventures of Sabrina has also cast some other major roles, including Michelle Gomez as another villain, in the form of Sabrina’s teacher, Mary Wardell, who has been possessed by the devil’s handmaiden, Madam Satan. While newcomer Chance Perdomo will play Ambrose Spellman, a young British necromancer. Ambrose is trapped in the funeral home where Sabrina lives with her aunts by a binding spell, and according to his character breakdown, he will be “one of Sabrina’s partners in crime.”

The series is set to debut next year, and the cast just seems to be getting better and better. It’s all very exciting.
