Chris Messina has joined DC/Warner Bros. Birds of Prey (And the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn) as villain Victor Zsasz, a serial killer who carves a tally mark on himself for each of his victims.
In the Cathy Yan film (based on the screenplay by Christina Hodson) Zsasz will be working alongside main antagonist Black Mask, to be played by Ewan McGregor.
Zsasz’s character was first introduced in 1992’s Batman: Shadow of the Bat #1, part of The Last Arkham series, however it wasn’t until 1996’s Batman Chronicles #3 that his backstory was explained. The head of his own international company, Zsasz is a rich man, still rich from his family’s enormous fortune. When he was 25, his parents are killed in a boating accident, Victor falls into a deep depression, getting into gambling and eventually loses everything to the Penguin.
Following this he tries to commit suicide, but after killing a homeless man he becomes addicted to killing, adding a tally mark to his skin every time he takes a life. Routinely incarcerated in Arkham Asylum, he was most recently brought to life on the small screen by Anthony Carrigan for Fox’s Gotham, but this will be the character’s big screen debut.
In addition to this announcement, Warner Bros. also revealed some other cast members (though their roles are being kept under-wraps) including Steven Williams (Supernatural), Derek Wilson (Preacher), Dana Lee (Hawaii Five-0), Francois Chau (The Tick), and Matthew Willig (The Ballad of Buster Scruggs).
Birds of Prey (And the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn) is slated for release on February 7th, 2020.
