“Don’t try to understand it. Feel it.”
Christopher Nolan is famed for his mind-bending world-view-altering films, and it seems that with his new, mysterious film Tenet, he may be exploring an espionage thriller where time really is the enemy.
Warner Bros. has finally released the first trailer for the film, but as with most Nolan projects it’s almost impossible to decipher what the film’s actual story is, and the intrigue only seems to make the film all the more interesting.
Starring BlacKKKlansman actor John David Washington, Tenet seems to recall the tone of Inception, as well as Nolan’s self-cited influences, The Matrix and Dark City. However, the theme of thinking in reverse echoes the director’s breakthrough psychological thriller, Memento.
The cast also includes Robert Pattinson, Elizabeth Debicki, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Kenneth Branagh, Dimple Kapadia, Clémence Poésy and Nolan regular Michael Caine.
Nolan told Entertainment Weekly that this film covers a lot of ground, both with its exploration of different genres, and the physical expanse of Tenet’s filming locations – as well as labelling it his “most ambitious” project to date:
“We’re jumping off from the point of view of an espionage film, but we’re going to a number of different places. We’re crossing a few different genres in a hopefully exciting and fresh way. We shot in seven countries, all over the place, with a massive cast and huge set pieces. There’s no question, it’s the most ambitious film we’ve made.”
Tenet is set for release on July 17th, 2020.
