Dave Bautista is pursuing the lead role of Marcus Fenix in the Gears of War film.

There are plenty of video game films currently in the pipeline, but few are so highly-anticipated as The Coalition and Epic Games’ big screen adaptation of Gears of War, the science-fiction war game has been a big hit for the studio and Microsoft since it launched in 2006.

Coalition announced a partnership with Universal at the end of 2016 to start the film adaptation to get moving, but there hasn’t been much more news since the studios tapped Avatar 2’s Shane Salerno to write the script over a year ago.

So, if Gears of War is ever going to happen, they will need to secure some major talent. While the director will help to shape the style and tone of the project, it will be the film’s cast that will provide further interest in the film. It’s too early for casting at this time, in Gears of War’s development, but Guardians of the Galaxy star Dave Bautista revealed in a Twitter Q&A that he’s eager to play the leading role:

Bautista is best known for his Marvel role of Drax the Destroyer, but recent years have seen the ex-WWE star expand his range to appear in some major films like Blade Runner 2049 and Spectre, and the upcoming Hotel Artemis. The actor would undoubtedly be able to fulfil the action requirements for the role, but if this wasn’t enough, he does bear a striking resemblance to Fenix in the games.

It’s far too early for the studios to even consider casting a lead actor, but most fans are in agreement that Bautista would be the best choice for the role of Marcus Fenix. In the game, Fenix was a soldier for the Coalition of Ordered Government prior to defecting, but later re-joined the organisation as a part of their last stand against the Locust Horde. In the sequels, Fenix has a huge arc centred around his family, which is set to continue in future games, and since Bautista has shown that he’s far more than the comedic character we see him as in the MCU, so it would be very interesting to see him take on the role.

For now, this may simply be a pipedream for fans, but we’ll bring you more on Gears of War when we have it.
