From Hamilton to crustacean
The new live-action Little Mermaid film is filling out its cast, as Variety has revealed that Hamilton star Daveed Diggs is set for the role of Sebastian, Ariel’s crab mentor and, let’s be honest, the character with all the best songs.
To be directed by Rob Marshall and written by David Magee, The Little Mermaid has already cast Halle Bailey as Ariel, Melissa McCarthy as the evil sea witch Ursula and Javier Bardem as King Triton, Ariel’s father.
The upcoming film will be incorporating the songs from the 1989 animated classic, as well as some new songs from the original composer Alan Menken and lyrics from Hamilton creator Lin-Manuel Miranda. Miranda is also set to produce alongside Marshall, Marc Platt, and John DeLuca.
Since his breakout performance in the dual role of Thomas Jefferson and Marquis de Lafayette in the Broadway smash Hamilton, Diggs has made a great transition into film with roles in the critically acclaimed Blindspotting (which he co-wrote and starred in) as well as Velvet Buzzsaw, alongside Jake Gyllenhaal.
