After being in the Netflix hit, Death Note, star Lakeith Stanfield is thinking ahead to his future – and he’s decided that he’s like to play The Joker. While Jared Leto has been set as part of the cast of both Suicide Squad 2 and the Harley/Joker spinoff, the Scorsese origin story part of The Joker remains open – and there are bound to be a number of contenders for the iconic role.
And Stanfield decided to ask outright, on Twitter:
As we know, comicbook fans can be a little set in their ways, and the notion of altering The Joker’s character may well be an unpopular one. Plus, there’s previous film and comicbook precedent in portraying the character as a white male. Casting Stanfield would be breaking barriers – and that’s likely to make people uncomfortable.
However, this could be an excellent move to give Todd Phillip’s Joker movie a unique edge over other portrayals of the clown prince. Stanfield has proven his talents as an actor – being the resounding highlight in Death Note, which disappointed many a fan and critic – plus, The Joker’s origin has retold many times – with he himself saying “If I’m going to have a past I prefer it to be multiple choice!”
So, what do you think? Could you see Stanfield as The Joker? Let us know in the comments!
