It’s been announced today that director of The Raid, Gareth Evans, is in talks to helm a Deathstroke movie, starring Joe Manganiello.

Manganiello signed on to play the character last September – but since then, a lot has changed. Zack Snyder was replaced by Joss Whedon on Justice League, the film that may have seen Deathstroke’s debut, and Matt Reeves replaced Ben Affleck as director on The Batman, in which the assassin would have been the main antagonist. So, quite rightly, Manganiello was at something of a loss even as recently as July as to where Deathstroke stood in the DCEU.

However, it looks as though Warner Bros. is unable to let go of the character, as The Hollywood Reporter has revealed that the studio wants to give the villain his own solo movie, and are in talks with Gareth Evans to make that happen. No deals have been made yet with either Evans or Manganiello, and with the shifting state of the DCEU it’s unclear where he would first be introduced – as being a Batman antagonist, he would need an introduction in a high-profile film, before hitting the screens alone.

The character of Deathstroke isn’t a non-entity however, as he has appeared in numerous Batman games, and The CW’s Arrow, played by Manu Bennett. He’s a character whose popularity is on the rise, however, not being necessarily being a top fan favourite does leave a filmmaker room to be able to fine the character for a larger audience.

So, while we await more news on the Deathstroke movie, all we can do is cross our fingers and hope Manganiello makes an appearance in Justice League.
