The Disney Imagineers, who over half a century ago introduced the world to audio animatronics in the form of singing birds in Disneyland’s Tiki Room have looked skyward for inspiration once more.
The company has unveiled what they have called “Stuntronics figures” which are robots who can perform aerial manoeuvres with precision. All part of an effort to create autonomous characters for Disney theme parks, so they appear more interactive, the Imagineers endeavoured to create a robot with acrobatic timing and reflexes.
The result of this work has been a 90-pound figure with enough onboard sensors to make real-time decisions.
Disney explained, upon announcing this development, “It knows when to tuck its knees to perform a somersault, when to pull its arms to twist and even when to slow down its spin to make sure it sticks that perfect landing.”
