Big screen heroes, just on a smaller screen.
This year’s Super Bowl included an advert teasing Disney+’s upcoming MCU TV series, including The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, WandaVision, and Loki.
The teaser begins with Anthony Mackie’s Falcon taking hold of Captain America’s iconic shield, before hurling the weapon. We get a number of shots of Mackie’s hero alongside his partner, Sebastian Stan’s Winter Soldier, as well as a glimpse of Baron Zemo (Daniel Brühl) the Civil War villain who returns to antagonise the duo in this series.
We also get a rather trippy look at WandaVision, the series which sees Elizabeth Olsen’s Scarlet Witch and her bio-synthetic boyfriend Vision (Paul Bettany) indulge in a domestic life that appears to mirror some of TV’s best-known family sit-coms, including The Brady Bunch, I Love Lucy, Family Ties, and even The Dick Van Dyke Show.
The series seems to be playing on the reality-bending powers Wanda has shown many a time in the comic books, most notably in the House of M arc. In print most of Wanda’s alternate reality moments happen in the wake of tragedy, when she is at her most vulnerable, so it’s possible that this series will take place post-Infinity War and Endgame, after Vision’s untimely demise. This would tie in nicely to the upcoming Doctor Strange sequel, as Doctor Strange is the one in the comics to teach Wanda to control her powers.
Last but not least, we get a morsel of Loki, which returns Tom Hiddleston to the role of the God of Mischief – a character who, at this point, is basically being kept alive by his devoted fanbase.
“I’m going to burn this place to the ground,” he sneers while prisoner of the TVA (Time Variance Authority), a group who monitor the timeline and were likely alerted when he once again stole the Tesseract in Endgame. Given the show isn’t set to air until 2021, it’s understandable that Hiddleston’s show is the one with least to show in the teaser, as it has only recently begun production.
It’s great to finally get a real look at these exciting new projects, but if we’re being honest, this teaser only leaves us wanting more.
The Falcon and the Winter Soldier and WandaVision are both set to arrive on Disney+ later this year, with Loki hitting the streaming platform midway through 2021.
