As work on J.J. Abrams’ Star Wars: Episode IX begins, two more actors have joined the ranks.
First up is Dominic Monaghan, who worked with Abrams on Lost. No stranger to a billion-dollar franchise, Monaghan came to fame when he played Merry in Peter Jackson’s Lord of the Rings trilogy, and now he’s set to make an appearance in a galaxy far, far away. But, we don’t know who or what his role will be, which isn’t unheard when it comes to Star Wars.
For his part, Monaghan is excited to join the project, telling Deadline, “The galaxy far far away has had almost as much influence as the one I live in, so I am delighted to be involved.”
No stranger to space travel is Doctor Who star Matt Smith, who has also boarded the film.
Recently nominated for an Emmy for his role as Prince Philip in The Crown, Smith is moving on, with Tobias Menzies taking over the role when the series returns. As with Monaghan, there’s no news on what Smith’s role will be.
Both actors join an already star-studded cast including Daisy Ridley, John Boyega, Oscar Isaac, Adam Driver, Keri Russell, Richard E. Grant, Naomi Ackie, and returning favourites Billy Dee Williams, Mark Hamill, and Anthony Daniels.
Star Wars: Episode IX is set for release on December 20th, 2019.
