Season 5 of ABC’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. added actress Dove Cameron in a mysterious role, and now with the release of a first look photo, Marvel have finally revealed who she will play.
In perhaps the team’s greatest adventure, Season 5 saw the Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. travel to the future, to a time after the destruction of the Earth (supposedly by Chloe Bennet’s Daisy) in order to save humanity. And just to make things more complicated, the remaining people have been conquered by the Kree, ruled over by Kasius (Dominic Rains).
Coulson (Clark Gregg) and the team have worked out a way to get home, along with the pieces of information which may allow them to prevent the Earth from being destroyed – however, they must battle Kasius for their freedom. While we knew that the agents would return to the present at some point, Marvel have now revealed one of the new characters they will meet on their return.
As is typical of Marvel projects, when it was revealed late last year that Disney Channel star Dove Cameron had joined the cast of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., her role was kept secret. Entertainment Weekly has now revealed a first look image of Cameron’s character, Ruby, described as “a young woman of cunning intelligence who has a mysterious obsession with Daisy.” Additionally, EW have revealed that Ruby is the daughter of General Hale (Catherine Dent), the US Army officer we met earlier this season.
For those who can’t remember General Hale, she was the officer at Blue Raven Ridge facility which held Fitz for six months. She was tasked with rounding up the agents after S.H.I.E.L.D. was overrun by Life-Model Decoys that destroyed their public image.
This connection between Cameron’s character and Hale indicates that the General and the Blue Raven Ridge facility will play a much larger role in Season 5 once we return to the present. As Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. has focused mostly on the future timeline, viewers don’t yet know how the Earth was destroyed, so it is likely that the rest of the season will uncover that mystery. And it’s possible that the Blue Raven Ridge facility may have something to do with it.
It remains to be seen how big of a role Cameron’s character will have in the coming episodes, however her interest in Daisy suggests that she may be able to uncover some details about Quake’s role in the destruction of the Earth.
In addition to Cameron’s debut and the return to the present, fans also have the 100th episode to look forward to as Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Season 5 continues.
