Fans of Paul Verhoeven’s Robocop should brace yourselves – because Murphy could return in sequel that sidesteps all previous sequels and the 2014 reboot.
According to the original 1987 writer, Ed Neumeier, MGM is exploring a number of different ways in which to return us to the original version of crime-fighting-cyborg Alex Murphy.
Neumeier said in an interview with Zeitgeist, “It’s nice that people are still interested in RoboCop and they have me working on a new one at MGM right now so maybe we’ll get another one out of it […] We’re not supposed to say too much. There’s been a bunch of other RoboCop movies and there was recently a remake, and I would say this would be kind of going back to the old RoboCop we all love and starting there and going forward. So it’s a continuation really of the first movie, in my mind. So it’s a little bit more of the old school thing.”
The use of the word “maybe” from Neumeier clearly means that this is still something which is in the ideas stage with MGM, so perhaps nothing will come of it. However, we might actually get the chance to see a direct sequel from Verhoeven and Neumeier.
Or we could learn from 2014’s mistakes and leave Robocop alone.
