As Aquaman approaches release, a new feature in Entertainment Weekly has given us our first look at Nicole Kidman’s Queen Atlanna, Patrick Wilson’s Orm and Yahya Abdul-Mateen II as Black Manta.
Directed by James Wan, Aquaman will explore a new side of the DCEU by diving to the depths of the ocean to Atlanna’s underwater kingdom and the realms surrounding it. The film promises to deliver some unique action, from Atlanteans riding great white sharks into battle to strange and unusual sea creatures that we’ve never seen before.
While fans are expecting the Aquaman trailer to arrive later this month, the film’s marketing campaign has already begun, with EW releasing some of the first official images from the film:
As with Mera (Amber Heard) and Aquaman (Jason Momoa), Atlanna’s costume isn’t far off how it looks in the comics, though there are some unique flourishes thrown into the mix.
As well as these covers, EW has also released some images from the film and filming process, that show Black Manta working on his costume, Atlanna holding what appears to be a young Arthur Curry, Arthur facing off against half-brother Orm (Patrick Wilson), and a still of James Wan working on set alongside Momoa and Heard.
The film’s trailer was shown at CineEurope earlier in the week, and fan response seems to indicate that this film will be a lot different to past DC movies – more fantastical and less grounded in reality. Hopefully, this will keep the DCEU on the right track after the disappointment that was Justice League.

Aquaman is set for release on December 21st.
