Well, it looks as though all Tyrese Gibson’s pleading with Dwayne Johnson hasn’t worked, as it’s been revealed that the ninth instalment of the Fast and Furious franchise will be pushed back a year, to 2020.
The film, which doesn’t have a director yet, was going to be released into theatres on April 19th, 2019 – however, now it will open on April 10th, 2020 – almost a year later. Most of the franchise’s stars will return, led by Vin Diesel, however, it’s unclear whether Dwayne Johnson will return, likely due to the tension between him and other members of the cast.
Earlier this year, the eighth instalment of the franchise, Fate of the Furious, had the largest global launch of all time, earing almost $1.238 billion worldwide. The studio plans to continue with Fast 9 and Fast 10, which has the release date of April 2nd, 2021, though it’s unclear whether or not this will be rescheduled as well.
Following Fate of the Furious’ release, Universal began plans on a spinoff film with Johnson and Jason Statham, possibly to be released in 2019.
