Power Rangers (2017)
Director: Dean Israelite
Writer: John Gatins
Starring: Bryan Cranston, Elizabeth Banks, Bill Hader, Naomi Scott, Dacre Montgomery
Just when you thought that Hollywood was done rebooting your childhood favourites, in comes the trailer for this year’s Power Rangers, giving us a longer look at the upcoming movie. In a plot that seems eerily similar to that of Josh Trank’s 2012 hit Chronicle, we see five teenagers from the quiet town of Angel Grove discover some colourful coins that make them glow the shade of the Power Ranger that they will later find themselves to be. It’s a somewhat forced way of modernising the multi-coloured teen superheroes, but it could have been a lot worse and, although there will never be a way to make the phrase “It’s morphin’ time!” more serious, this modern version of the teen heroes seems remarkably toned down.
The highlight of this trailer however, is our first real look at Bryan Cranston as Zordon and Elizabeth Banks’ Rita Repulsa, the first villain that the Power Rangers will find themselves facing. And, with a power that allows her to create great, towering monsters, it seems that the Rangers will be powerless to stop her. This is when we get a glimpse of the new and improved Megazord – a sight that will make any Power Rangers fan’s heart skip a beat. Suffice to say, Power Rangers will give its fair share of nostalgia, but it’s unlikely to be like any we’ve seen before.
