The first promotional picture and teaser trailer for the next in The Purge series, The First Purge, have finally been released, and there is a lot of propaganda borrowed from the most recent US presidential election.

The First Purge will take the audience back to the origin of the Purge itself, explaining how the fictional “New Founding Fathers” managed to get the entire country on board with people taking 12 hours a year to do the most violent crimes that they can think of.

Beginning as a social experiment, the violence was confined to Staten Island, where poor people were paid to stay and be victims.

A few months ago, screenwriter Jason DeMonaco explained, “People from Staten Island can easily go to Brooklyn for the evening, so what they do is start promising very decent sums of money for the very poor people in the neighbourhood. It becomes a monetization of murder and violence, incentivizing killing and keeping people around for them to be victims.”

It seems an appropriate beginning for a tradition which has been designed to reveal the very worst in people, fitting in with The Purge’s commentary on society.

Naturally, The First Purge is coming to cinemas on July 4th.
