The Avengers Project/Reassemble
Developers: Square Enix, Crystal Dynamics and Eidos Montreal
There have been many superhero games released since the gaming industry first began its rise to the top – from wildly successful series, such as Batman: Arkham, to lighthearted casual games in the LEGO universe and finally the less successful games… (*cough, splutter* Superman 64)
With the announcement that Square Enix and Marvel are collaborating on a new game series, thus far known only as ‘The Avengers Project,’ hope may be given anew to Marvel fans across the world, who have been patiently awaiting the arrival of a big budget Marvel gaming project since the release of the 2012 blockbuster.
Whilst there’s an abundance of classic beat-em-up revivals, brawlers and simple pleasures in games like The Incredible Hulk: Ultimate Destruction (nothing like a PS2 and classic titles), plot-driven Marvel games have either somewhat missed the mark or been outright non-existent in recent years. (Honorable mentions do go to the brilliant Deadpool and Punisher titles, though)
In the announcement made by Square Enix regarding their upcoming Marvel collaboration, however, there’s a sense that fans may finally get the action-adventure they’ve been yearning for since the 20-teens began; an Avengers based, grown up game for us big kids.
Whilst we’ll have to wait until 2018 for a fleshed out idea of what this series of games may entail, there can be hope taken from Phil Rogers (CEO, Square Enix of Americas and Europe), who commented that their aim is to create “epic, imaginative experiences allowing gamers to live out their Super Hero dreams like never before.”
Can it be 2018 yet?
