HBO have thrown out the prequel series
Deadline has reported that showrunner and writer Goldman has been emailing the cast and crew of the project to inform them that the pilot is dead, however HBO have not confirmed this development.
The prequel, created by the Kingsman scribe and creator George R.R. Martin, was set to take place thousands of years before the battles of Game of Thrones, which finally ended its eight-season run in May of this year. Dealing in issues of race, power, intrigue and White Walkers, the prequel was greenlit in June 2018.
It was picked up amongst many other Game of Thrones prequel scripts which had been commissioned by the network. The pilot, carrying heavy expectation, was in editing, when HBO gave a greenlight to another project from Martin and Ryan Condal, which is set 300 years before the events of Game of Thrones, and follows the beginning of the end for House Targaryen.
But is the real problem that audiences have simply had enough of the GoT universe following the mightily disappointing final season of the hit series? We shall see.
