Hollywood is doing this weird thing lately by taking roles meant for Asian actors and giving them to white people. What is strange about this is that they’re not even trying to cover up the fact that they KNOW the role should have gone to a Japanese actress. According to many sources, with the help of CGI, Paramount and DreamWorks commissioned visual effects tests that would’ve altered Scarlett Johansson’s appearance in post-production to “shift her ethnicity”. They ultimately gave up on the effects, but still if that wasn’t a slap in the face of any Asian actress, I’m not sure what is.

What’s even more vexing is that most of the cast is Asian, with legend Beat Takeshi taking the role of Daisuke Aramaki. So why not cast Rinko Kikuchi (Pacific Rim), Karen Fukuhara (Katana in upcoming Suicide Squad movie) or even Chiaki Kuriyama (Gogo from Kill Bill) as Motoko Kusanagi of the JAPANESE National Public Safety Commission? The obvious answer is to put butts in seats, Scarlett Johansson is a big actress. However, if you can’t sell Ghost in the Shell, one of the most prolific anime titles of all time, I don’t think Scarlett Johansson will save your movie.
