Sony’s reboot of The Grudge has revealed the film’s main cast, as well as setting a start date for filming.
This isn’t the first time we’ve seen a version of The Grudge, with 2004’s take starring Sarah Michelle Gellar as a nurse threatened by a supernatural curse. Although, this in itself was a remake of classic 2002 Japanese horror, Ju-On.
Throughout the years, horror movies have proved themselves to be increasingly profitable, and now Sony are set to reboot The Grudge with an eye to launching a franchise to rival Blumhouse’s recent successes.
Variety has reported that Demian Bichir (The Hateful Eight) and Andrea Riseborough (The Death of Stalin) will head the film’s cast, confirming the recent news that said Riseborough was being sought for the female lead. Director Nicolas Pesce will helm the film, adapted from his own script, and filming is set to begin in May.
The companies responsible for thriller Don’t Breathe – SPWA, Ghost House, and Good Universe – will produce The Grudge reboot. Ghost House founder Sam Raimi, gave a preview of what we can expect:
“We are so excited about this new adaptation. We went back to the original source material to deliver a relentless supernatural thrill ride that explores the horrors of American suburbia.”
