HBO has given a series pickup to Joss Whedon’s new science fiction series, The Nevers.

The Avengers director will act as writer, director, executive producer and showrunner (because clearly he hates having downtime) of The Nevers, a sci-fi epic about a gang of Victorian women who find themselves with strange abilities, powerful enemies, and a mission that may well change the world.

This will mark the first TV series that Whedon has worked on since he co-created ABC’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. and the first created by him alone since 2009 FOX series, Dollhouse. Before this, Whedon was known for his cult series Firefly and Buffy the Vampire Slayer, both of which have strong and dedicated fanbases to this day.

HBO president of programming, Casey Bloys said of the venture, “We have long been fans of the incredibly talented and prolific Joss Whedon and we can’t think of a better project than The Nevers with which to welcome him to the HBO family. We look forward to meeting the strange, multifaceted characters of The Nevers, to learn their stories, see them in action and share them with our viewers. We’re honoured that Joss chose HBO as the place to build his ambitious new world and we are excited to get started.”
