This film came out of nowhere
From the producer of Get Out, Antebellum is an upcoming horror thriller starring singer/actor Janelle Monáe that appeared to come out of nowhere this week when it released a surprise teaser trailer.
Facts about the film are thin on the ground, but as far as the plot’s concerned, Antebellum will see Monáe play a successful author named Veronica Henley, who stumbles across a mind-bending mystery. This is eluded to in the teaser as we see her character find herself in a terrifying alternate reality.
The teaser appears to show that modern woman Veronica will somehow find herself trapped in a pre-Civil War world, where she and others are put to work on an estate.
It’s worth noting that the definition of antebellum reads “occurring or existing before a particular war, especially the US Civil War” which lines up well with what we have already seen of the film.
As well as Monáe, the film also stars Gabourey Sidibe (Precious), Kiersey Clemons (Flatliners), Jack Huston (Boardwalk Empire), Eric Lange (Narcos), Marque Richardson (Dear White People), and Jena Malone (The Hunger Games).
Antebellum is written and directed by Gerard Bush and Christopher Renz, and will be the duo’s first feature film, after having worked predominantly on shorts.
To accompany the teaser, Lionsgate also released a set of three posters – one black, one white, and one red – but all with the same design of a bleeding butterfly accompanied with the somewhat sinister tagline: “If it chooses you, nothing can save you.”
Antebellum is set for release on April 24th, 2020.
