The Vikings of Berk return in the new trailer for How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World.

DreamWorks’ How to Train Your Dragon franchise returns for a third outing next year, with Hiccup (Jay Baruchel) and Toothless discover new worlds and new dragons on their travels. The first two films, released in 2010 and 2014 were widely praised for their touching story and gorgeous animation. The Hidden World, was intended to be released in theatres back in June 2016, but after ComCast bought DreamWorks, they changed their slate, pushing the release back to 2019.

The film’s synopsis has revealed that the third film will see Hiccup and Toothless have their friendship tested “like never before”, now that the young dragon rider is the chieftain of Berk. While they will find themselves facing a “dark threat” in the form of villain Grimmel (F. Murray Abraham), the duo will also deal with the appearance of a mysterious female Night Fury and the discovery of the titular “hidden world”.

Helmsman of the first two films, Dean BeBlois, is also writing and directing The Hidden World, with the intention of bringing the franchise to a suitable close. In doing this, the film will aim to move the franchise closer to Cressida Cowell’s source material, and reveal why dragons no longer freely roam the earth.

Although we got a peak at the film with the release of the first official poster, this trailer gives a little more detail to the story at hand. We see that Grimmel is obsessed with the idea of hunting and catching Toothless, desiring to add the Night Fury to his collection of dragon “trophies”, and threatening the peace that Hiccup has carefully cultivated on Berk.

Fortunately for the Viking and his dragon, a hidden realm of dragons is revealed, where the creatures can take refuge – and it also offers a potential mate for Toothless in the form of an ethereal light Night Fury.

From the trailer it’s clear that The Hidden World will provide a bittersweet and heartfelt conclusion to the How to Train Your Dragon franchise that will likely be an emotional journey for fans.

How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World is set for release on February 1st 2019 in the UK, and March 1st 2019 in the US.
