They’ll be no Zac Efron, or anyone, it seems.
Since the final Easter egg in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, which revealed that Ayesha (Elizabeth Debicki) had created Adam Warlock, fans have been eager to see the character make his debut in the MCU – however director James Gunn has now shut down the idea.
In an Instagram Q&A one fan asked Gunn whether fan-favourite for the role, Zac Efron, had been cast as Adam.
Gunn was quick to shut down speculation, replying “I never even said there was going to be an Adam Warlock. And NO ONE has been cast in Vol 3 except the actors already in the movies.”
Fans had hoped that Adam Warlock would appear in Avengers: Endgame, given that he proves crucial to defeating Thanos in the comics, but obviously this didn’t happen – perhaps due to the Russo Brothers not wanting to introduce a completely new character at such a crucial point in the MCU.
The film’s writers have since admitted that they never intended to include the character, with Stephen McFeely saying, “Never – never. The logic right here was to honour the MCU as how it had already existed and the characters you’d already fallen in love with. […] We did not want to give too much story space to introducing a whole new person. It would rob you from somebody.”
So, at the moment it’s a “no” to Adam Warlock, but perhaps not “never”.
