Sony’s Spiderverse is coming together
Oscar-winning actor Jared Leto has made the leap from DC to Marvel, and now we’ve got a taste of his new role with the teaser for Sony’s Morbius.
Unlike the fan-favourite character of Venom, who got his first solo outing in 2018 with Tom Hardy in the titular role, Morbius is mining a more unexplored corner of the Spider-Man universe. However, excitingly the trailer appears to include details and appearances that bridge the gap between Sony’s expanded Spider-Man universe and Marvel Studios’ Cinematic Universe.
Leto stars as the enigmatic Michael Morbius, a scientist with a rare blood disorder who finally discovers a remedy for his affliction – however, the consequences of his cure may prove worse than the illness itself.
A lot of the teaser is dedicated to a bit of a rundown on Michael Morbius and his condition, but towards the end are some very juicy details. In particular, we see the face of the vampiric antihero he becomes, which actually looks remarkably like he does in the comic books. However, the most exciting thing for Spider-Man fans to see was the appearance of Michael Keaton, reprising his Homecoming role of Adrien Toomes, a.k.a. the Vulture.
It even appears that some graffiti in the film references Tobey Maguire‘s Spider-Man, perhaps confirming the arious rumours that Sony’s is planning its own Spider-verse:
Sony’s official synopsis of the film reads, “Dangerously ill with a rare blood disorder, and determined to save others suffering his same fate, Dr. Morbius attempts a desperate gamble. What at first appears to be a radical success soon reveals itself to be a remedy potentially worse than the disease.”
Morbius is slated for release on July 31st, 2020.
