And the first one was pretty big.
Aquaman was DC and Warner Bros’ surprise hit, and now it’s been confirmed that there will be a sequel, fans are wondering just what its story will include.
We already know that Jason Momoa and Amber Heard will be reprising their roles of Arthur Curry and Mera, respectively, and it seems as though Black Manta (Yahya Abdul Mateen II) will be the main villain.
But while everything else is currently unknown, leading man Jason Momoa has assured fans that the sequel will be bigger and better than the first film.
Speaking with Entertainment Tonight, Momoa gave a vague but promising statement about what fans can expect from Aquaman 2, “There’s a lot more in store on so many more levels. There’s going to be a lot. It’s way bigger!”
It’s a pretty basic way to comment on the project, but it does imply that Momoa has at least seen or heard an outline of what’s to come.
One thing that many fans have been concerned about is Black Manta, who didn’t make a huge impression in the first film. While his arc was a sad one, the character was fairly unsympathetic, simply coming across as kill-obsessed after his father’s death. It seemed as though they could have waited to bring in Black Manta, as there was little attention paid to the character who is a particular fan-favourite in the Aquaman comics. It will be interesting to see what the writers do with his character in the sequel.
Aquaman 2 is currently slated with release on December 16th, 2022.
