Since American Horror Story: Apocalypse was announced, fans have been asking whether series regular, Jessica Lange (who has appeared in 4 out of the current 7 series) would be returning, and they have an answer – not only will Lange be back, but she will be back as her Season 1 character, Constance Langdon.
At the show’s Television Critics Association panel, executive producer Alexis Martin Woodall explained that the series’ title, Apocalypse, will be literal. “The story begins with the end of the world, and then our world begins.”
Sarah Paulson, who also appeared at the panel with fellow stars Leslie Grossman, Billie Lourd, Adina Porter and Emma Roberts, revealed that Jessica Lange will return as Constance in Episode 6, which Paulson herself will be directing.
Woodall said that creator/EP Ryan Murphy has invited all of the witches to return to the series – whether the others will follow Lange remains to be seen, but “the invitation is out there.”
While the critics wanted names, the cast and crew were easily able to dodge the questions. “You guys got a lot of information today,” Paulson scolded, “Let’s eek it out, so there’s stuff to look forward to. It’s like Love Boat; you open the door and ‘Oh my god!’”
However, when the discussion returned to the topic of Apocalypse, Woodall tried to clarify the concept, explaining that it is about the end of the “real world.” When this stumped the critics, she continued, “It’s very tangible, is that cagey enough?”
Paulson, simply added, “It’s the apocalypse in the truest sense of the word.”
So, while we might not actually know what’s coming in Season 8 of American Horror Story, we do know Jessica Lange will be there – and the stories are far from over as FX network chief John Landgraf announced that AHS will be returning for a ninth and tenth series as well.
