Sources have told Deadline that comedian and actor Jim Carrey is in negotiations to star as Robotnik in Paramount’s Sonic the Hedgehog film.

Sonic has been a favourite of gamers since the ‘90s, and has been adapted across consoles and gaming platforms, as well as having spawned five TV series in its history, however this is the franchise’s first serious venture into film. Jeff Fowler is set to helm the live-action/CGI adaptation of a script written by Pat Casey and Josh Miller – the basic gist of which is that Sonic must stop Dr. Eggman from succeeding in his plans for world domination, after he imprisons animals in robots and steals magic Chaos Emeralds.

Carrey will join Westworld’s James Marsden and Ride Along’s Tika Sumpter who have already been cast in as-yet unknown roles.

Sonic the Hedgehog is set for release on November 15th 2019 in the US, and November 28th 2019 in the UK.
