The final moments of 2017’s John Wick: Chapter 2 saw Keanu Reeves’ titular hitman with a $14 million contract out on his life. And the forthcoming third chapter picks up exactly where we left John Wick.
Reeves told Entertainment Weekly, “The third chapter is literally connected to 2 and starts with John Wick on the run. It goes crazy from there.”
Part of all this craziness involves new character Sofia (Halle Berry), who John meets in the Middle East. Reeves said of Berry’s character, “She has a past with John. I end up going to find her to see if she can help me.”
Sofia’s appearance also continues the tradition of the film’s canine-centred plots, as she has two Belgian Malinois dogs. However, director Chad Stahelski explained “Whereas John’s puppy was symbolic of his wife, Halle’s two dogs are symbolic of someone she’s lost.” He also let slip that they developed an action sequence centred on her “canine assistants… They work very well tactically.”
As well as Berry, Chapter 3 also includes newcomers Mark Dacascos and Asia Kate Dillon, who play two characters associated with criminal council, the High Table. In addition to this, Anjelica Huston will be playing “someone who was responsible for [Wick’s] upbringing and his protection” in the film which Stahelski calls “a little bit of an origin story.” This is particularly interesting as how John Wick came to be the legend that he is as a hitman has remained something of a mystery in the earlier films.
John Wick: Chapter 3 is set for release on May 17th.
