Let’s say it together: NOT EVERYTHING NEEDS A SEQUEL
Well, in the current climate of sequels, threequels, sagas, remakes and reboots, it’s no surprise that the success of Todd Phillips’ Joker already has fans calling for a sequel. However, some aren’t so keen on the idea – namely Athur Fleck himself, Joaquin Phoenix.
Phoenix recently spoke to The Los Angeles Times, where he was asked if he would consider returning to the role for a sequel, and unsurprisingly, the actor didn’t mince his words.
“I wouldn’t just do a sequel just because the first movie is successful,” he explained, “That’s ridiculous.”
It isn’t all that surprising as Phoenix has literally never done a sequel to anything in his career, and famously turned down the role of Doctor Strange because he didn’t want to be tied down to doing more films. While he and director Todd Phillips both joked about the possibility of a sequel, the actor was very open about the appeal of Joker being a one-off:
“Part of the whole attraction to me [of ‘Joker’] was there was no expectation. I didn’t sign a deal to do [more movies]. It was a one-off.”
So, regardless of whether Warner Bros. want a Joker sequel, it seems that they will have to pull something pretty special out of the bag in order to get Phoenix back on board for a sequel.
