Warner Bros. has confirmed that Joaquin Phoenix’s Joker origins story will have the title – wait for it – Joker. They have also set the film’s release for October next year.
Todd Phillips is directing and has co-written (with The Fighter’s Scott Silver) the origin story of Batman’s infamous archnemesis, which is already being described as a gritty character study, and a cautionary tale of a man disregarded by society, who becomes the ultimate villain.
Joker begins production later this year, and is expected to fall under a different branch of Warner Bros. DC films, standing apart from the mainstream DCEU titles – and therefore will not affect Jared Leto’s role as the clown prince.
This film is probably the most anticipated of all the Joker films that are currently in development, which undoubtably has much to do with Phoenix taking the role, as well as it existing outside of the hit-and-miss DCEU.
Joker is set for release on October 4th, 2019.
