Could he be up for another round?
With Sony and Disney having finally come to a deal for at least one more Spider-Man film starring Tom Holland, it’s no surprise that Marvel are looking to bring back Jon Watts to return to the franchise he’s helmed from the start.
Deadline were first to announce the news, with their sources saying the Watts’ deal is nearing completion. The finalities of the studio deal must be ironed out before they can focus on locking in the director.
Before the eruption of the Disney/Sony deal, Watts didn’t have a deal in place for the next Spider-Man film, and he wasn’t locked in to return – so hopefully he hasn’t filled his plate with new projects in the time since the studios began warring over the franchise.
Spider-Man: Homecoming earned over $880 million worldwide, with this year’s Spider-Man: Far From Home became Sony’s highest-grossing film ever, earning more than $1.13 billion worldwide. So, obviously Watts has a knack for delivering superhero stories that audiences love, and Marvel Studios will definitely want to hold on to that.
