It’s so secretive
Game of Thrones actor Joseph Mawle is set to lead Amazon’s Lord of the Rings series alongside Will Poulter and Markella Kavenagh.
The fantasy series hails from writers Patrick McKay and JD Payne, and director J.A. Bayona. It is set in Middle-earth and explores a number of new storylines preceding the events of J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Fellowship of the Ring.
No details have been revealed about the characters, but Deadline (who first reported the news) believe that Mawle will be playing the series’ lead villain, Oren, opposite Poulter’s young hero Beldor and Kavenagh’s female lead Tyra.
Amazon has cast a pretty wide net in order to search for talent, reading actors from around the world and working with casting directors in the US, UK and Australia. Which is probably why casting news is coming so slowly.
Mawle is best known for his role of Benjen Stark on Game of Thrones, brother to Ned Stark (Sean Bean). He is the latest link between HBO’s smash hit and Lord of the Rings, as GoT co-executive producer Bryan Cogman is consulting producer on this new series, and former HBO EVP Production Bruce Richmond (who worked on GoT) is serving as executive producer.
