Spinoffs and sequels are everywhere these days, and one that’s set to return to (computer) screens, is ‘80s classic, Karate Kid. But this isn’t any old reboot, as new YouTube Red series Cobra Kai, reunites childhood rivals Daniel LaRusso (Ralph Macchio) and Johnny Lawrence (William Zabka) in their adult life.

Entertainment Weekly debuted the first footage from the series, which will premiere later this year, though no exact date has been given. The brief trailer shows us snippets of past events, as well as the old Cobra Kai dojo, ending in another standoff between Daniel and Johnny, as the latter looks to be training a new generation of karate kids.

“We are not trained to be merciful here,” Johnny explains to his students. “Mercy is for the weak.”

The synopsis for Cobra Kai reads:

“Picking up 30 years after the 1984 All Valley Karate Tournament, the half-hour series finds Daniel and Johnny at different places in their lives. Whereas Daniel is living his best life as a family man and proud owner of the No. 1 car dealership in the Valley, Johnny has fallen a long way since the ’80s and is now a heavy drinking, short-fused antihero living in Reseda, doing odd jobs to make ends meet. However, their rivalry is reignited when they re-enter each other’s lives, which drives Johnny to rediscover his Cobra Kai roots and reopen the infamous karate dojo.”

The supporting cast of the series will include Courtney Henggeler (Mom) as Daniel’s business partner and wife Amanda, Mary Mouser as their daughter Samantha, Xolo Maridueña (Parenthood) as Cobra Kai recruit Miguel Diaz, and Tanner Buchanan as Johnny’s son, Robby. Ed Asner will also appear in a guest capacity as Johnny’s stepfather Sid Weinberg.

Written and executive produced by Hot Tub Time Machine’s Josh Heald, and Harold and Kumar creators Hayden Schlossberg and Jon Hurwitz, the series is sure to have a serious injection of humour.

We’ll bring you more on Cobra Kai when we have it.
